Behold the 15th page of my current comic series! I've always loved stories within stories, like when the characters in The Lord of the Rings tell stories unrelated to the plot, or in the Redwall series when they include stories or songs that the characters are telling or singing. This page is part of that - a story within a story - the bigger context being what I experienced on my latest Vision Quest a few months ago, and this being a story a lovely Oak tree told me while I was there.

By the way, the canvas bag I'm carrying in the first panel is kind of a short-cut version of a bag I have and use for ceremonial purposes. The "SLT" stands for Snow Leopard Trust and the drawing is a rough representation of their logo. 

 

The Snow Leopard Trust is a non-profit organization I personally support. They work with global communities toward the conservation of these great cats through research, education, as well as empowering those who live in Snow Leopard's vicinity to protect local wildlife and ecosystems.

Originally this comic was much different and much shorter, the intention being that it tell the story of a recent shamanic dismemberment experience. When I realized the ending of that particular story wasn't as cut and dried as I thought, and that it blended into, and formed only part of the the bigger story of my recent Vision Quest, I had to shift gears, questioning whether "Dismem-boar-ment" were really the best or most accurate title for this series. At this point I'm considering the Dismemboarment part as chapter 1, and this page as the first page of chapter 2. But for simplification and to make it easier to keep up with the unfolding story, I will keep the title of the series the same here on my blog.

So a funny thing happened on the way to the dismemberment. As this page says, after I finished the last 5 pages of this comic series, I suddenly realized that I wasn't sure how the experience had ended, and then having a vision quest to prepare for I didn't have the extra time to try to figure it out. And so our comic changes gears, to move in a different direction to find its conclusion. Stay tuned!!

Though it may seem like a gruesome prospect, dismemberment is a very healing, and painless, process for expanding beyond the ego and deepening your awareness of your connection with the Divine. That is why I included the quote from Sandra Ingerman on the last page in order to give some context and purpose to something which, to our civilized minds, might appear punitive and/or destructive, but which actually frees us, safely and sacredly, from the bonds that hold us captive to a more limited perspective of reality, and separates us from our own innate, Divine nature.

Space Shark Origins

Here is another Space Shark comic I drew as a kid which I recently inked and cleaned up from the original that was drawn on lined paper with pencil. This is the origin story and shows absolutely no early influence from Star Trek.

Space Shark is one of the few comics from childhood to have survived into my adulthood. Of course in more recent times the origin story has changed a bit. I thought I would share the current origin story from my graphic novel The Collected Gerb's Quarterly Vol 1:

Space Shark

In between my other comic projects I found myself working on something I'd wanted to do just for fun for a long time. When I self-published my Little Brother graphic novel, being about a soul retrieval I performed on myself to reconnect with and heal a younger part of myself, I included one of the earliest comics I'd ever drawn to honor that young boy of me to see his work actually published. The comic was a four page adventure called Space Shark about a race of space-faring sharks.

In Little Brother, though, I just included what were basically photocopies of my original work, which was drawn in pencil on lined paper. So recently I took those photocopies as if they were my own penciled pages, and I inked them in, trying to stay true to the original lines as if the younger me had done the inking. Then I uploaded them, ran them through a couple filters, and used an editing program to attempt to clean up the splotches as well as the original college-ruled blue lines, leaving, in essence, what the comic may have looked like had the younger me drawn it on actual drawing paper and had finished it off by inking it. 

It was a fun side project and I'm happy to present it here:

I am praying that the copyright gods are kind and don't ding me for the surprise cameo appearance by a certain muppety bird on this page, hoping that because I never actually capitalized 'big bird', it's technically an adjective and noun rather than an actual name.

Though it may seem from my lack of posts that I haven't been working on my comics as much recently, nothing could be further from the truth. I have been diligently drawing away at the thumbnails for the next chapter of my Saga of Didrik, and now that they are done I've begun to draw the finished pages, starting with this one.

Knot Me

Of late I have been so preoccupied with drawing my Saga of Didrek comic, for which I currently have 8 or 9 pages thumbnailed and ready for the finished drawings to begin, that I haven't been doing my 'normal' comics. Suddenly this one struck and I haven't been able to focus on much else the last couple days - In fact yesterday I was actually grateful that I ended up doing no readings during my 7 1/2 hour shift at a local metaphysical store so that I could keep drawing, and today I was so intent on finishing that I failed to complete my weekly Totem Tuesday post for my Perching Wolf Studios facebook page.

So this is the final page of the first chapter of my comic adaption of the ancient Danish/Norse epic tale, The Saga of Didrik of Bern. Two more chapters to go! Now I need to begin thumbnailing the next chapter, and there may be another comic page or two in-between, but we will see.

I also may redraw the first page of this chapter. It had been some time since I'd drawn Gerb and the gang, so he's a little stiff in the first drawing, kind of like a staged first-day-of-school picture, so now that I've been drawing them again I think Gerb has loosened up somewhat.

Saga of Didrik page 6 - Or a Winged Wolf

 Page six of seven of my current comic project of creating a graphic novel version of a few chapters of the ancient Norse epic, The Saga of Didrik of Bern, is done! To read all the previous pages in this series click on the Didrik label below the post.

In case you were curious about the image on Gerb's bracer in the last panel, it is actually a rough sketch of my heraldic device (coat of arms) from the Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA, which is a Medieval recreationist group I belong to. 

Above is a colored version of the drawing to make it more clear, and below is a photo of an actual archery bracer I started making, with an image of my device tooled into the leather, to show what it is based on. The only difference is that the one below doesn't have the green "embattled" border that my official Award of Arms has. 

The official heraldry blazon, or description, of my Award of Arms is Or, a winged wolf salient sable within a bordure embattled vert. So if you suddenly find your self in the Barony of Wyewood, tell them Lord Lovell sent you!

Saga of Didrik page 5 - The Dude Bear Cometh

 When planning out this comic version of the ancient Saga of Didrik, I realized I needed one more character than the normal cast of three in my little troupe of players. I had a couple different choices - I could double up and have one of them play two roles, which can get confusing and feels a bit sloppy, or I could reintroduce another of my childhood comic characters to fill the minor part, but running through the rolodex of candidates, none of them seemed suitable to play Gerb's three year old son - That is until I remembered someone else who, though not technically in my stable of comic characters, used to periodically appear in my comics, who in fact would get upset if I didn't occasionally include him. He was very small bear with a very big ego.  

Meet Newmar! 

When I was married, Newmar entered our lives as my ex-wife's teddy bear who, very Winnie-the-Pooh like, began accompanying us everywhere. He had quite the personality and though he had no voice, spoke volumes through his gestures and body language. After a while my ex said it was as though she were channeling him to move him into his various positions and actions so he could express himself - It was automatic and intuitive, and not something she would even think about. He really had a life of his own ("No officer, it wasn't my idea. It's our teddy bear that goaded me into driving over the train tracks really fast so that our tires left the ground...") particularly when he declared himself a wizard, donning a purple wizard's gown with stars and moons on it, a scarf that acted like a cape, and multi-colored stripey witchy socks. There were a couple of times when he got tired of waiting for me to draw him, so he took matters into his own hands and started drawing the comic, starring him of course, without me.

Anyway, I just wanted to give a brief introduction for those of you following this comic and wondering where the heck this wizard bear came from. And now page 5 of The Saga of Didrik!
