The advantage of having a perpetual half dozen projects in progress simultaneously is that, when you hit a snag in one, there’s always another one to pivot to in order to maintain creative momentum. 

On arriving at the final page or two of my Daniel Boone and the Giant chapter of my Sasquatch Sagas project, I realized, due to some of the archaic terms in the original narrative, it required a little more research in order to clearly see a vision of the unfolding story and how to translate it onto the page. 

So while that is mulling about in the background, I am afforded the opportunity to turn my attention to another project that has lingered unfinished for some time - my Dismem-boar-ment comic about a profound Vision Quest I experienced a few years ago.

Dismem-Boar-Ment page 31

This is the next page of one of my ongoing projects which has a tendency to get put aside in favor of more current projects. This page in particular has lingered in the back of my brain for awhile because it is a sort of segue between 'chapters,' so, for a long time it floated around, refusing to come completely into focus, because it lacked the same energy that drives the actual telling of a story. 

Still, I was getting itchy to finish this series which was in its final stages of being finished, which required looking directly at the challenge without looking away - or at least looking directly at my journal, which held the unfolding narratives of this project, without flinching - and this page is the result.

Dismem-Boar-Ment page 26(A)

In the course of drawing this particular series, I realized the need for a slight adjustment. The most recent pair of pages I’d drawn were designed to be seen opposite each other for the full effect…

…However, with the numbering of the pages, these two would be on the back side of each other. The obvious solution - That I required an additional page to occur someplace earlier in the series to assure that these two fell into their preferred places - was… um… obvious. And I knew exactly what I could add, and where. 

I had a number of pages detailing interactions I’d had on my vision quest with Herne the Hunter, at one point with Herne declaring I to be his son…

…Fast forward to a recent exploration into my genealogy, where I uncovered a family bloodline on my father’s side with the surname of Herne. Exploring a little deeper, I discovered that my 8th Great Grandfather, Richard Herne, following in the footsteps of his Great Grandfather, Sir John, had been the High Sheriff of London in Elizabethan times, and had in fact overseen the execution of Sir Walter Raleigh. 

So this designation, as the Son of Herne, is a literal one, and would explain the resonance I have felt for the ‘Wild Men of the Forest’ - be they Tarzan, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, or Robin Hood - who have always been my greatest heroes. And it makes me wonder of that liminal space between history and myth - Might I be descended from the original Herne the Hunter, whomever and whenever he may have been? I don’t know, but for now - How cool is this?!

Just like the rest of my life, I have a number of things actively in progress when it comes to my comic projects. Though I have had no lack of material for chronicling my daily life and current challenges, I'm trying to make sure I'm not letting other series languish for too long. And so, here are the next two pages from my "Dismem-boar-ment" series concerning my experiences from a vision quest a few years ago. 

For obvious reasons, I drew these two pages together.

 

Below is how the two pages would appear together, if I can work out how to make sure they're positioned side by side. I may have to add another page somewhere along the way to make it happen, but the resulting effect is definitely worth the effort.

And then, just to bring it all full circle, I wanted to see what it actually looked like together as one image, and with color...

Dismem-Boar-Ment page 28

I present this page in the spirit of Divine Timing. This particular page, the latest in my "Dismem-boar-ment" series, has stumped me for a year and a half. For whatever reason, I could not get a clear picture on how I wanted this page to look, despite countless pages and thumbnails exploring dozens of possibilities. Then suddenly last night, as I was sitting here just recovering from oral surgery, it all just clicked and this was the result. 

So with the relief and joy that accompanies the flow of the Spring melt and the initial running of the sap in the Vernal quickening of creative juices, please enjoy this page with the anticipation of more to follow.

As usual for any given situation in my life, I have several brands in the fire when it comes to my comic projects. Not including any one-shot, one- or two-pagers that randomly occur, I have at least three separate comic stories actively in progress -- 

Dismem-boar-ment - Chronicling some profound experiences from a Vision Quest a couple years ago (Click on the corresponding label below to read the story so far)

Smoke and Mirrors - A exercise of soul-searching in response to some outside resistance I encountered to my spiritual path (Click on the corresponding label below to read the story so far)

Saga of Didrik - First of a planned series of adaptions of archery myths and legends from around the world, the latest page of which is posted here (Again, click on the corresponding label below to read the story so far)

So I'm going to try (I know! "...There is no try, only do or do not..." blah blah blah...😉) to concentrate on Didrik, being the one closest to being finished, and, I believe, the one I've been working on the longest, to free up some creative energy on the other two. My intention is to not let anything linger in limbo for too long. It's good to have a couple things going at the same time, so I have a couple choices of were to apply and follow my inspiration, depending on the accompanying emotional states. When things go on for too long, though, without closure or completion, for me it seems to leave loose ends which are fertile ground for the development of guilt and self-judgement, which tends to block or clot the creative energy, slowing the creative flow to the detriment of all creative projects. 

So, in that spirit, here is the latest page in the last chapter of the Saga of Didrik!

At the beginning of the comic, when I connected with Artemis, I figured enough people were familiar enough with Greek mythology that she probably didn't need an introduction. On my last comic page in this series, however, I introduced Herne the Hunter, and knowing that not as many people had heard of him, an introduction seemed appropriate.

I still remember vividly the moment I first read the words "Lord of the Forest" because they resonated so deeply inside me. There is a tightly knit web within me of my love of animals and nature, of camping and archery, of childhood heroes (Tarzan, Daniel Boone, Davy Crocket, Robin Hood) and my matron goddess Artemis, of the wild and innocent Unicorn heart that beats in my chest. Herne, the Lord of the Forest, is hard-wired into me. He's who I want to be when I grow up, which makes the pages immediately following this one so extremely humbling.

Behold the 15th page of my current comic series! I've always loved stories within stories, like when the characters in The Lord of the Rings tell stories unrelated to the plot, or in the Redwall series when they include stories or songs that the characters are telling or singing. This page is part of that - a story within a story - the bigger context being what I experienced on my latest Vision Quest a few months ago, and this being a story a lovely Oak tree told me while I was there.
